New York State participates in Operation Safe Stop

With an estimated 50,000 vehicles that illegally pass school buses every day in in the State of New York, authorities are finally cracking down.   On April 16, 2015 Sheriff’s deputies and police officers from all over New York State participated in the Operation Safe Stop Day. Marked and unmarked cars were used to issue tickets to anyone who passes a school bus illegally. Media outlets were invited to ride along with police cars to raise awareness to the public on this important issue.

A first time offense can cost the driver a $400 fine and 5 points on their license.  This issue has severe consequences due to the seriousness of the matter.  Drivers need to be especially aware on divided roads and multi lane highways.  The flashing red lights to signal others to stop, protect a child from being struck by a motor vehicle. Last year, 91 tickets were issued in Erie County during Operation Safe Stop. Statistics for this year’s program will be available at the end of April.  The pedestrian accident lawyers of William Mattar remind drivers to always be aware of pedestrians and when they have the right-of -way.
