Takata Airbag Recall Expanded

Posted: October 23, 2015

Several months ago, approximately 19 million cars in the United States were recalled due to defective airbags manufactured by Takata Corp. Now, it seems as though the recall may be expanding.

The New York car accident lawyers at William Mattar Law Offices explain the original recall only involved driver and front-seat passenger airbags capable of hurling metal shrapnel at vehicle occupants during a collision. But testing has shown side airbags manufactured by Takata are also capable of rupturing uncontrollably when the unit activates.

According to The New York Times, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is continuing to investigate how many vehicles may be affected by the recent Takata airbag recall. However, some current estimates show that as many as 25,000 vehicles made by Chrysler could be affected.

Investigators are also continuing to research what is causing the airbags to malfunction. One of the most probable theories is that the ammonium nitrate Takata uses as a propellant to inflate the airbags could be changing over time, causing alterations in the chemical reactions that activate each unit.

The legal staff at William Mattar Law Offices encourages anyone who has been harmed by one of the units involved in the Takata airbag recall to take action now. Doing so can help ensure your legal rights are protected.
