A 25-year-old Newfane, New York, woman has been formally charged in connection to a fatal accident involving a bicyclist. According to the Buffalo News, distracted driving and speed were to blame for the crash.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred on July 16at around 12:20 p.m. The young woman was driving a Chevy Malibu southbound on Transit Road, when the vehicle struck a bicyclist from behind. The impact sent the rider of the bicycle flying over the hood and windshield of the vehicle. He died as short time later.

A preliminary police interview with the woman who caused the Buffalo Bicycle Accident found she may have been distracted by two young children in the backseat of the car. The woman claimed to have never seen the biker; however, further investigation found that she was texting on a cellphone and speeding at the time of the crash.

The woman was charged by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department yesterday with reckless operation of a vehicle, use of a portable device for texting while driving a motor vehicle, speeding, and failure to use due care. Her first court date is set for Aug. 14.

The Buffalo Auto Accident Lawyers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists of the dangers of distracted driving and they ask that everybody do their part to prevent this type of accident by putting down the phone while driving.
