When we hear the term “distracted driving”, our first thoughts turn to cellphones. What many drivers don’t realize is that simple things, such as changing the radio station or tending to children, can be just as deadly.

A 68-year-old man from Newfane, New York, was struck and killed by a distracted driver while riding his bicycle earlier this week. According to The Buffalo News, the crash happened at 12:20 p.m. on Monday afternoon, along Transit Road in Niagara County.

Reports indicate that the bicyclist was traveling southbound when a vehicle, driven by a 25-year-old woman with two young children, came from behind and struck him. Deputy Jared C. Ander, a spokesman for the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department (NCSD), stated that the impact from the Buffalo Bicycle Accident sent the rider over the roof of the car. The bicyclist died as a result of the collision.

When asked how the accident happened, the young woman who was driving responded that she never saw the bicyclist. Ander added, “She appeared to have been distracted by the children.”

NCSD officials say that charges in the case are pending the outcome of a full investigation into the incident.

The Car Accident Lawyers with the William Mattar Law Offices ask that all drivers be aware of their surroundings on the road at all times in order to keep others safe from harm.
