The Albany Bicycle Accident Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices explain that drivers who fail to yield to or recognize oncoming cyclists cause a large portion of the accidents between bikes and motor vehicles. In fact, the Department of Transportation recorded a total of 36 bicyclist deaths in New York due to collisions with motor vehicles in 2010.

To put into perspective just how common these accidents are, a 14-year-old girl was seriously injured as the result of a collision with a truck while riding her bike this week. Reports indicate that collision occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the corner of Hudson Avenue and Maiden Lane in Columbia County.

According to a story from The Register-Star, the girl was riding along Hudson when the rear tire of a northbound pickup truck being driven by a 20-year-old man struck her. The impact of the crash left the girl with injuries to her leg and back, including muscle strains, that required she be airlifted to a hospital in Albany for further treatment.

The incident leaves many cyclists curious as to what they can do to better protect themselves from being injured or killed in the event of an accident.

William Mattar Law Office’s team of Albany Personal Injury Lawyers explains that simply wearing a helmet can reduce the chances of injury or death in the event of an accident by as much as 40 percent.
