A teenager died on New York’s Staten Island on the night of Monday, August 29, in a horrific car accident that also injured several others.
The accident occurred around 9:45 p.m. when a 25-year-old male who was operating a Chevy Suburban reportedly sped down Hillside Terrace with six teenage passengers in his car. The driver then plowed through a stop sign at Hylan Boulevard, causing the Chevy to collide with a Nissan Sentra that was being driven by a 20-year-old. The Chevy flipped over and crashed in a parking lot, throwing its occupants onto the pavement. Afterwards the driver escaped from the Chevy and fled the scene.
A neighbor who witnessed the crash began to chase after the driver, but stopped when he heard the cries of the Chevy’s passengers.
“I had to help the people who were laying all over the street so I let him run away,” the witness told the Staten Island Advance.
In total, eight people had to be taken to Staten Island North University Hospital, where one 18-year-old male was declared dead. One victim suffered a shattered ankle, while another lost part of an arm.
The driver of the Chevy, who has previously been arrested for grand larceny, assault, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and petit larceny, was apprehended after a chase through Bensonhurst.
