New Crash Tests on Booster Seats Yield Warnings, Suggestions

Following crash tests of all the leading booster seats, The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety now has new recommendations and warnings for parents of the four- to eight-year-old age range who typically utilize the seat.

The Institute examined 62 booster seats, including 21 dual use models, testing an average six-year-old-sized crash dummy.

The safety research and testing group gave 31 booster seats its “best bet” rating because they correctly position a safety belt on a child in almost any vehicle. The Wall Street Journal points out that prices on the “best bet” seats range from $15 to several hundred dollars.

The Institute also found that half of all booster seats fall short of safety.

The purpose of booster seats isn’t as apparent as rear- and forward-facing carseats, which hold a child snugly, but the idea behind the booster is to “boost” the child into the proper position so that the designed-for-adult seatbelt will protect them in a car accident.
