A 52-year-old woman from Finger Lakes, New York, died Thursday evening in a two-car crash on the Thruway in Montezuma, New York.
The woman, who was a well-known chef in upstate New York, was the passenger in a 1985 Volkswagon van driven by her 47-year-old husband. The couple were returning from a trip to Vermont at the time of the crash.
Police report that the collision occurred when the woman’s husband moved into the left lane and struck a 2004 Buick driven by an 18-year-old man from Nedrow, New York.
Both cars went off the road and overturned – the Buick landed in the median and the Volkswagon on the right shoulder of the road, where it hit a tree.
The woman died at Auburn Memorial Hospital of internal injuries. Her husband was treated for lacerations at Upstate University Hospital where he is listed in fair condition. A 47-year-old passenger who was in the Buick is also in fair condition at Upstate.
New York State Police Seargant Robin Urbaniak told The Democrat and Chronicle that they are continuing to investigate the crash and that no charges have been filed.
