Dozens of elementary school children were playing kickball outside Rochester, New York’s Thomas Ryan Community Center on Monday afternoon when an SUV veered off the road and into the play field, killing a 7-year-old boy and injuring an 8-year-old boy.
A student at School No. 33, the 7-year-old had just made a running kick when he was hit and killed instantly by a 1997 Ford Explorer driven by a 51-year-old man who was reportedly having a seizure or another medical problem. Then car also struck an 8-year-old before crashing through a metal fence, hitting a parked mini van, and overturning in the recreation center parking lot.
Both the boys and the driver were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where the deceased boy’s parents chose to donate his eyes and heart, reports WHAM 13.
The driver suffered a head injury but is reported to be in satisfactory condition, as is the other 8-year-old who was injured.
The mother of the late boy told The Daily Mail that she doesn’t blame anyone for the accident.
