In the last week two Troy, New York, children have been hit by cars – one was killed and one suffered an external ear injury.

The first accident occurred on Memorial Day at 7:46 p.m., when a man driving a pickup truck fatally hit a 6-year-old boy outside his family’s home on 10th Street and then left the scene of the accident.

Neighbors and police quickly identified a 21-year-old man as a suspect and he surrendered at police headquarters on Wednesday, June 1, after his truck was seized and impounded on Tuesday.

The driver has been indicted by a county grand jury on charges of Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident Without Reporting It and Third-Degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

The man had previously been arrested in connection with a December shooting and had a suspended driver’s license for failure to pay child support. He remains in Rensselaer County Jail without bail.

On Thursday afternoon, the most recent accident happened near the intersection of First and Monroe Streets when a driver hit a child on a bicycle with a car. The driver then contacted the police and stayed on the scene until they arrived. The child was taken to Albany Medical Center to be treated for an external ear injury.
