Edward Gibson

Car Accident Attorney

Attorney Edward Gibson was born in Monticello, New York and was raised in the lower Hudson Valley region of New York State. He has resided and practiced law throughout upstate New York over the course of his career. After spending some time living in the Atlanta, GA area, Ed made the decision to return home to upstate New York to be closer to family and old friends.

Ed received an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration from Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York in 1985. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Public Administration from the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute in Utica, NY in 1987 and was a magna cum laude graduate. He worked as a commercial insurance underwriter for several years and then attended law school at SUNY Buffalo Law School in Buffalo, New York receiving his Juris Doctor in 1995. While at SUNY Buffalo, he was the 1995 recipient of the Dean’s Award for Legal Ethics based upon a paper he researched and wrote on the topic of conflicts of interests faced by attorneys hired by insurance companies to represent their insureds.

Admitted to practice law since 1996 in New York State, Ed is a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, New York State Trial Lawyers Association and the Onondaga County Bar Association.

Ed has many years of experience as both an in-house claims litigation attorney and a trial attorney for insurance companies prior to his current work as part of a private law firm litigation team. His previous experience in the world of insurance gives him a unique perspective for his case work as a personal injury attorney. When asking Ed what prompted him to become a lawyer, he says, “I decided to become a lawyer while working as an insurance company underwriter. I had the opportunity to interact with lawyers working for the company and decided I wanted to become a lawyer because it is a profession which gives me the opportunity to help people who are facing complex challenges or problems which they could not resolve on their own.”

Describing himself as a “life-long learner”, Ed also enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience by teaching others. While employed in the insurance industry Ed was a frequent speaker and presenter at industry educational conferences and events on topics related to insurance coverage, litigation management, trial strategy and the use of expert witnesses. He was also an adjunct instructor for several years in the paralegal studies program at Schenectady County Community College in Schenectady, NY where he taught courses on the courts and litigation, New York and Federal civil procedure and legal writing.

When asking Ed what motivated him to join the William Mattar team, he says, “I was motivated to apply at the firm because I was impressed by the firm’s team approach to handling cases. In addition, since the firm has been recognized a number of times as one of the Best Companies to Work For in New York State, I had the sense that this was an environment in which I would be appreciated both personally and professionally. I was also strongly drawn to the firm’s commitment to helping others.”

He is most passionate about seeing the legal system used to protect the rights of individuals and to ensure justice for people who have been harmed or injured by the wrongdoing of others. Ed is inspired to work as a personal injury attorney for a number of reasons. “I have a strong desire to use the knowledge and experience I gained working for insurance companies to help injured people hold those companies accountable. I believe that everyone wants to be able to feel that what they do in their day-to-day lives makes a difference in the world around them – in their family and in their community. My personal value set is heavily focused on helping others. Working at William Mattar provides me the opportunity to actually put my personal values into action in what I do every day.”

What he finds most rewarding about helping people is the satisfaction that comes from seeing that his efforts have actually been able to help someone else get through a difficult or challenging circumstance because it reminds him that his life has a greater purpose. Ed has been an actively involved supporter of many community and charitable organizations and causes including Habitat for Humanity, the Children’s Miracle Network, the American Red Cross, the ASPCA, Folds of Honor, and many groups providing support to local homeless populations, veterans and the victims of domestic violence. Over the years he has also been active in his local church and in the Lions Club.

He currently resides in the Syracuse, New York area with his family and their dog Hank. In his personal time, Ed says, “The thing I enjoy most is spending time with my family. I am an avid reader and I also enjoy writing. In the past I have ghost-written many articles for publication on the internet blogs of others. I am also very interested in history and in my family genealogy which has lead me recently to become a member of the Sons of Union Civil War Veterans. However, I am happiest when I am outdoors either in the backyard with my family or somewhere off and enjoying nature.” He enjoys fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking and snowshoeing. When not engaged in outdoor activities, Ed is an avid fan of music of all types, but particularly jazz and blues. He is also a baseball fan. Ed enjoys attending live musical performances and baseball games. A couple of years ago Ed got to cross a number of items off his “bucket list” when he took a trip to Colorado and was able to hike in the Rocky Mountain National Park, take in a baseball game in Denver, and explore the beauty of several national forests, as well as see some musical shows at the Red Rocks Amphitheater.
