The driver of a stolen vehicle on Interstate 787 in Albany, New York, on Saturday, May 12, caused two cars and a motorcycle to crash.

TimesUnion.com reports that a teenage driver was traveling northbound in a stolen 2005 Ford near midnight when he collided numerous times with a guardrail. The Ford had been reported stolen on May 8.

Two northbound cars and one northbound motorcycle then wrecked while trying to avoid the Ford. The 24-year-old driver of the motorcycle, from Troy, had to be taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he was treated for injuries.

The stolen car was driven by a teenager from Troy, New York, and contained two passengers, both age 16 and residents of Troy. The passengers fled the scene of the crash but were later located by officers a mile away from the site. They were treated for non-serious injuries at Albany Medical Center, charged with possession of stolen property and released to their parents.

The teen driver, now being held at Albany County jail, was charged with possessing stolen property and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

The Car Accident Lawyers with the William Mattar Law Offices know that personal injuries, car repairs, medical bills, and paperwork can be a lot to handle alone.

May 15, 2012

After a 4-year-old boy was hit by a passing car in Saratoga, New York, on Friday, his caregiver was charged with child endangerment.

TimesUnion.com reports that the 28-year-old caregiver—the girlfriend of the boy’s father—could face up to a year in jail if she is convicted of the misdemeanor. Police say she was “the adult in charge of looking after the children and allowed the 4-year-old to cross the highway without direct supervision.”

The boy was crossing Route 9P on his way to swim when he was hit by a car. He was hospitalized at Albany Medical Center with leg and pelvis injuries.

Police say the 41-year-old driver, from Rexford, had a “very limited view” of the boy because a parked vehicle on the street was obstructing her view as she traveled north. The boy struck the side of the woman’s car.

The caregiver will be expected in Saratoga Town Court at a later date.

Drivers must obey traffic rules, including yielding to pedestrians when they have the right-of-way. The Pedestrian Accident Lawyers at William Mattar Law Offices understand that unfortunately pedestrian accidents can occur because drivers either don’t see the person crossing the street or they don’t understand who has the right of way. Our lawyers determine why the New York pedestrian accident occurred and help prove who was at fault for the accident. We know the laws in New York and work to protect the rights of those who’ve been hurt.

May 11, 2012

Head-on collisions are statistically proven to be more dangerous than any other type of motor vehicle collision. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration says that while head-on collisions only account for 2 percent of all accidents, they are responsible for more than 10 percent of all fatal wrecks.

Take, for instance, the case of an accident that occurred Tuesday in Van Buren, New York. According to The Post-Standard, the crash occurred at 11:30 a.m. on Route 31. New York State Police indicate that a 42-year-old Fulton, New York, woman was driving a 2001 Subaru Forrester north when she suddenly collided with a 1988 Toyota Corolla with an 81-year-old woman behind the wheel. The impact sent both vehicles flying off the road and required rescue crews to cut the women free from the wreckage.

The elderly woman was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment for the injuries she sustained. She was last listed in critical condition, suffering from a broken neck, forearm, and ribs, as well as both legs being fractured. The driver of the Subaru was taken to a different facility where she was treated for a broken foot.

The Auto Accident Lawyers with the William Mattar Law Offices say that the best way to prevent a head-on New York Car Accident is to always stay alert to the road. It is important to always buckle up and drive defensively as well.

A 22-year-old North Massapequa, New York, motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after being involved in an accident late last week.

May 9, 2012

A 22-year-old North Massapequa, New York, motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after being involved in an accident late last week. According to reports from CBS-6 News, police believe that alcohol and high speed may have been contributing factors to the crash.

The collision happened around 1:20 a.m. Saturday morning at the intersection of Merritts Road and Motor Avenue in South Farmingdale. Nassau County Police say that the young man was driving his motorcycle on Merritts Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the bike causing it to drop to the asphalt. The rider was then thrown from the machine moments before it slammed into a parked Chevy Malibu in the driveway of a nearby residence. The driver was thrown under the parked vehicle, where he became lodged until rescue crews arrived and were able to pull him to safety. The impact of the motorcycle with the parked car split the bike in two.

The motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital in East Meadow, New York, where he remains in the intensive care unit. Police arraigned the man in his hospital bed on charges of driving while intoxicated Saturday afternoon.

A Buffalo Motorcycle Accident can happen when you least expect it. That is why the auto accident attorneys with William Mattar Law Offices suggest that motorcyclists always wear helmets. Also, remember to drive defensively, slow down, and never drink and drive.

A recent case of a tragic hit-and-run accident in the town of Lancaster, New York, claimed the life of a 14-year-old teenager.

May 7, 2012

According to government statistics, approximately one in ten car accidents are considered hit-and-run accidents. The rate of these instances has also skyrocketed by 15 percent over the past 15 years.

Take, for instance, the recent case of a tragic hit-and-run accident in Lancaster, New York, that claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy. According to WGRZ 2 News, the crash occurred at 8:45 p.m. Thursday along Lake Avenue, near Sagebrush Lane.

Reports from the Lancaster Police Department indicate that the teen was riding his bike south along Lake Avenue on the eastern side of the road. That’s when a car approaching the boy from behind crossed over the center dividing lines of the road and hit him. The driver paused only for a moment before speeding away.

A resident who witnessed the crash followed the 23-year-old driver to his home where he confronted him about the accident and brought him back to the scene.

“I thought I hit a tree, so I kept going. It’s my fault. I left because I’m an idiot,” the man told police. He now faces charges of leaving the scene, failing to stay left of center, DWI, and vehicular manslaughter.

Drinking and driving is the one of the most common causes of Buffalo Bicycle Accidents. That’s why the Auto Accident Attorneys with the William Mattar Law Offices ask that motorists never get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.

The devastating effects of drunk and distracted driving became a reality for a 36-year-old Royalton, New York, woman after she was told in court Wednesday that she will spend every weekend for the next four months behind bars.

May 4, 2012

The devastating effects of drunk and distracted driving became a reality for a 36-year-old Royalton, New York, woman after she was told in court Wednesday that she will spend every weekend for the next four months behind bars. An article from WGRZ 2 News stated that the sentence was handed down for charges stemming from an accident in which the woman hit two teen pedestrians.

Court documents show that the accident happened less than a year ago on Dysinger Road. The woman admitted to police that she had been drinking heavily that day and was in the midst of receiving a text from someone and holding her cellphone when her vehicle veered off the road and collided with two teenage boys who were walking along the roadside.

Both boys suffered serious injuries including one of the victims, a local 15-year-old, who was in a coma for more than three weeks following the accident. The woman plead guilty to charges of driving while intoxicated and two counts of vehicular assault in January and was sentenced to five years of probation on top of her jail time.

Statistics show that distracted and drunk drivers are responsible for causing more than one-third of all serious New York car accidents. That’s why the Buffalo Auto Accident Attorneys with the William Mattar Law Offices ask that all motorists refrain from using hand held devices while driving, as well as drinking and driving.

State and federal governments have a responsibility to ensure that the highways are safe and suitable to be driven on. That may not have been the case Sunday when a minivan carrying seven passengers plunged off a highway overpass, killing all on board.

May 2, 2012

State and federal governments have a responsibility to ensure that the highways are safe and suitable to be driven on. That may not have been the case Sunday when a minivan carrying seven passengers plunged off a highway overpass, killing all on board.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution stated that the section of the Bronx Parkway where the accident occurred is on the New York Department of Transportation’s 5 percent list, which is a list of roads in the state that exhibit “the most severe highway safety needs.” This particular stretch made the list because of its steep hills, winding curves, inadequate guardrails, and lack of a breakdown lane.

Reports indicate that the woman driving bumped a curb in the center divider, which blew a tire out on the vehicle. The Honda Pilot minivan then went across three lanes of traffic where it hit a two-foot concrete curb and went airborne over a four-foot tall guardrail. Experts say that the second curb acted as a launching pad for the vehicle and shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

The crash wasn’t the first at this location. In 2006, six people were killed when a vehicle crossed the median into oncoming traffic. Earlier this year, another vehicle went over a guardrail at the same location.

The Car Accident Lawyers with the William Mattar Law Offices would like to send their thoughts to the family of the victims.

April 30, 2012

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that more than one-third of all fatal motor vehicle accidents and hundreds of thousands of crashes resulting in injuries are caused by alcohol. That’s why it’s so important that law enforcement keeps these intoxicated motorists off the roads.

Two such drivers were arrested in Western New York this past weekend in separate incidences. According to WIVB 4 News, the arrests were made moments before innocent victims were injured.

The first incident occurred Saturday morning in West Seneca, New York, when a 52-year-old resident became enraged with another driver on a rural road. He cut her off and struck her car at the corner of Seneca Street and Harlem Road. Police were called to the scene and determined through field sobriety tests that the man was intoxicated. He’s now facing charges of Failure to Stay in Lane, DWI, and aggravated DWI.

The next day, police were called to the scene of a woman in the middle of Orchard Park Road. When police arrived, they found the 29-year-old Blasdell woman standing in the middle of the street blocking traffic. She failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on charges of DWI.

The New York Car Accident Lawyers with the William Mattar Law Offices would like to encourage citizens of New York to not drink and drive. Instead, call a cab or loved one to get you home safely.

The manslaughter case of a prominent New York doctor began earlier this week with new details about the night he hit and killed a teenage skateboarder while on his way home from a party.

April 27, 2012

The manslaughter case of a prominent New York doctor began earlier this week with new details about the night he hit and killed a teenage skateboarder while on his way home from a party. Buffalo News reports that the accident occurred on July 8 2011 just before 11:30 p.m. on Heim Road in Amherst, New York.

Servers from a country club where the doctor was a member testified that he had been drinking mixed drinks and wine for several hours before leaving in his 2010 BMW to go home. Testimony shows that the doctor was texting and driving at a high rate of speed when he struck the teenage girl, killing her instantly. He then fled the scene only to contact police more than an hour and a half later, claiming he did not realize he had hit the girl.

Attorneys for the doctor also denied that he was intoxicated at the time of the accident, despite test results that showed his blood alcohol percentage was well above the legal limit five hours after the crash occurred. They also argued that although he had texted on his way home, he was not using a handheld device at the time of the accident.

Statistics from Mothers Against Drunk Driving show that the average drunk driver has driven under the influence approximately 80 times before his or her first arrest. They also found that 50 to 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers continue driving on suspended licenses.

Take, for instance, a 38-year-old man who was arrested in Eerie County, New York, Tuesday evening after being caught driving while more than four times over the legal blood alcohol limit. WIVB 4 News says that the man was pulled over on Grand Island Boulevard after a license plate scanner showed he was driving on a suspended license. He then failed several field sobriety tests, including a Breathalyzer that showed his blood alcohol content to be .29 percent. Since the man had a previous DWI charge from 2004, he will now face a count of felony DWI.

Another man is also facing felony DWI charges after he was caught driving intoxicated with children in the car. Because those children were younger than 16-years-old, under Leandra’s Law, the DUI charge becomes a felony.

Lawmakers are battling the problem of repeat drunk drivers by considering more severe punishments for offenders, which could include the mandatory installation of an ignition interlock system on offender’s vehicles.
