January has been named Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning Awareness Month in New York State. As part of the campaign, William Mattar Law Offices is distributing Free Carbon Monoxide Detectors to families in the area in need of CO protection in their homes.

The devices will be distributed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan.26, at the Tops Friendly Market located on Seneca Street in Buffalo. There will be a limit of one unit per household. The firm would like to remind citizens that there are several other steps that can be taken to help protect households from the dangers of CO poisonings.

A guide from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention instructs families to have battery-backup or powered CO detectors installed in your home. A qualified technician should also inspect gas, oil, or coal burning appliances, such as heating units and stoves, annually.

The agency reminds families to refrain from running vehicles or fossil-fuel burning appliances in unventilated areas of the home. Families should also never attempt to heat residences with gas ovens.

The Personal Injury Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices are confident that if used properly, these devices and tips will help keep people in western New York safe from the dangers of CO poisoning.
