Police Say Speed And Alcohol To Blame For Fatal Red Hook Car Crash

January 16, 2012

Three young men from Hudson, New York, died Sunday morning after being involved in a single-vehicle crash. According to reports from ABC 10 News, the accident occurred at approximately 1:13 AM along State 9G in Red Hook.

New York State Police responded to the scene of the Dutchess County crash where they found the vehicle near a tree it collided with. Rescue crews cut the victims from the vehicle, but determined that all three were dead after freeing their bodies from the wreckage. Accident reconstruction teams determined that the 24-year-old driver had been drinking before he lost control of his vehicle, then careened off the shoulder of the road and into a nearby tree. They also determined that speed, as well as alcohol, played a part in causing the crash.

The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents are now the leading cause of death for young people today. They estimate that 11 young people die every day in car accidents across the country; however, speed and alcohol are the two major contributing factors to fatal motor vehicle accidents within all age groups.

The New York Auto Accident Attorneys with William Mattar Injury Lawyers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to keep themselves, and others, safe on our highways by:

  • Always Buckling up
  • Always Obeying Posted Speed Limits
  • Never Getting Behind The Wheel After Drinking

DWI accident closes road in Westmoreland

January 4, 2012

A hit-and-run accident on Tuesday morning sheared a telephone pole in half and closed a portion of a Westmoreland street, reports WKTV News.

Sometime before 12:30 a.m. a 26-year-old Westmoreland man was heading east on West South Street and lost control of his vehicle, striking a pole and shearing it in half. He was able to regain control of his vehicle and left the scene of the accident, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s.

The pole fell across the roadway, making it impossible for the snow plows and drivers to get through. A portion of the West South Street was closed to traffic early Tuesday morning.

The deputies noticed the man’s pickup truck with front-end damage at the Nice N Easy Grocery Shop on West Main Street and Route 233. After questioning the driver about the damage, they were then able to link his truck to the accident.

The driver of the truck is charged with DWI, failing to keep right, leaving the scene of an accident, and not wearing a seat belt.

Move Over Law saves lives

January 2, 2012

New York State’s Move Over Law is being expanded to include more vehicles, according to Hudson Valley Your News Now.

In an effort to keep all workers safe, New York lawmakers have amended the year-old Move Over Law to include, not only emergency vehicles like police cars and ambulances, but also maintenance, utility, and tow trucks.

“All drivers need to understand that they have a responsibility to keep roads safe. Slowing down and moving over for emergency and hazard vehicles on the highway needs to be one of those responsibilities,” State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said.

The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) has 100 work zones set up across the state each day. There were 100 accidents involving drivers at those work zones last year.

“When you’re working to hook that vehicle up or load that vehicle on a tow truck, if you’ve got traffic passing by you, it’s hazardous, it’s dangerous, and it’s one more worry,” said tow truck operator Doug Rowland.

A big part of the amended law will be enforcement. Anyone caught violating it could face a $275 fine, three points on their license, and potentially jail. Troopers issued roughly 16,000 citations for the Move Over Law in its current form last year.

17-year-old pedestrian killed by drunk driver

December 19, 2011

A high school senior died after he was struck by a drunk driver while standing on a Brooklyn street divider on Friday around 9:40 p.m., reports the New York Daily News.

The 17-year-old man was standing on a Cropsey Avenue traffic island at Bay 37th street in Gravesend when a 2000 Dodge minivan jumped the curb and struck him.

The young man, who lived with his parents just a block away, was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where he later died.

“He was a senior, a top student at Stuyvesant,” said his father. “He wanted to study environmental science. He believed he could make a difference. His message was always work hard, always be generous.”

The father said that his son was returning home from his school’s Board Game Society, of which he was the president.

“He stayed late on Fridays to be with his friends,” the grieving father said. “That was his fun night.”

The young man had won scholarships to a handful of colleges, including a four-year merit scholarship to Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, his parents said.

The 46-year-old van driver came to a stop after he ran the van into a light pole. He was cuffed at the scene and later charged with vehicular manslaughter, DWI, and speeding.

New York college student dies in I-81 crash

December 14, 2011

A 20-year-old Long Island man was killed in a fiery car crash on Interstate 81 on Saturday, December 3, reports the Times Tribune. The Susquehanna County Coroner said that he died of smoke inhalation.

The victim, identified as a student from Mount Sinai, New York, was driving north of I-81 at 2:32 a.m. when his vehicle drove off the right side of the highway at mile marker 211 in Susquehanna County and hit a rock embankment.

The vehicle came to rest on its driver’s side on the highway’s shoulder and became engulfed in flames, according to state police.

The young man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. An autopsy performed Sunday morning revealed that his death had been caused by smoke inhalation, the coroner said.

He was a student at Ithaca College in upstate New York, where he was enrolled in the school’s music program, a college spokesman said.

He was returning to the school from New York City when the accident occurred.

An email was sent to students by the school of music’s dean informing them of his death and offering counseling to those mourning him.

“From my own experiences with [him], and with impressions I have gleaned from his teachers, [he] was a wonderful student, a talented musician, and a warm and beautiful person,” said the dean.

Two killed in Pawling, New York, one-car auto wreck

December 12, 2011

A one-car double-fatal car accident occurred in Pawling, New York, on Saturday, December 10, at approximately 2:25 a.m., reports The Daily Mail.

In response to a 911 call, Dutchess County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the West Dover Road area. When they arrived, they found one car rolled over with two injured occupants inside. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the vehicle, a 2002 Honda Accord, was being driven northbound on West Dover Road when it exited the roadway while going through a curve.

The vehicle then struck an embankment, overturned, and hit a tree before coming to its final rest off the eastern side of the roadway.

A 24-year-old Pawling woman was driving the car, and a 31 year-old Wingdale man was the front seat passenger. Both were wearing their seatbelts.

Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit is continuing its investigation into the exact cause(s) of the crash, but at this time, it appears as though unsafe speed was a significant factor.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, the Pawling Fire Department, and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office.
