Just after midnight on Monday, a 59-year-old New York City Department of Transportation highway repairman was killed on the job while patching up Cross Island Parkway in Queens, New York. The man was run over by a truck that was backing up on the Parkway; it was driven by one of his colleagues, a 46-year-old male.
The man, who was married with two children, was pronounced dead on arrival at North Shore University Hospital early Tuesday. He had worked for the DOT for 18 years.
The Wall Street Journal reports that police don’t suspect any criminality on the part of the truck driver. An official statement by the city calls the death an accident and says that police are investigating.
“The accident is a tragic reminder that so many dedicated, unsung city workers take on dangerous assignments each and every day to ensure sure our city can run,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “As I said to [the victim’s wife] this morning, the thoughts and prayers of a grateful city are with her and all of [the victim’s] family and friends.”
