NHTSA Announces April as Alcohol Awareness Month

Government statistics show that more than a quarter million people are arrested each year for drunk driving. Of those individuals, approximately one-third have been previously convicted of the crime. In addition, estimates from Mothers Against Drunk Driving show that the average drunk driver will commit the crime nearly 100 times before being caught, and the number of repeat offenders is growing.

For instance, a 32-year-old Queensbury, New York, man was recently arrested for his sixth drunken driving charge in as many years. According to CBS 6 News, the arrest occurred Tuesday night on the Adirondack Northway when the intoxicated man nearly hit a Warren County Sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car head-on while driving the wrong way. He’s being held on charges of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and operating without an ignition interlock system.

In an effort to fight the growing problem of intoxicated drivers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has declared April as Alcohol Awareness Month. It will be conducting events throughout the month that are aimed at educating the public of the dangers of drunk driving.
