New Feature on GM Vehicles Hopes to Prevent Children Deaths in Hot Vehicles

Posted: June 23, 2016

GM has announced a non-optional feature on their 2017 GMC Acadia to remind parents to check the backseat before exiting a vehicle.  As many people still cannot fathom the thought of accidentally leaving their child in the back of a car, an average of 37 children have died this way each year since 1998.* (https://money.cnn.com/2016/06/13/autos/gmc-child-back-seat-reminder/index.html)

If at anytime the back seat has opened and closed, the sensor will notify the driver with a “rear seat reminder” near the speedometer as well as an alarm.  This feature will activate whether or not the engine has already been running when the back door was opened and closed.

William Mattar law offices has been actively involved in their safety campaign “In the Heat, Check the Seat” as well.   The law firm has sent safety decals to Buffalo day care facilities, police stations, radio and television stations with the William Mattar “In the Heat, Check the Seat” logo promoting awareness of the danger of leaving children and pets in vehicles.  The hope is that having this decal on a vehicle will alert the driver or someone passing by that a child or animal might be inside.   With the participation of the New York State police on this campaign, William Mattar hopes to bring heightened awareness to the community.
