Lawsuit Filed Against Ford Motor Co. For Faulty Fuel Tanks

A lawsuit was filed against the Ford Motor Co. Wednesday, claiming that the company sold vehicles over a 10-year period with defective fuel tank linings. According to reports from Reuters, the company knew about the defects, yet hid the knowledge from consumers.

The lawsuit alleges that 10 E- and F- model vehicles made between 1999 and 2008 had fuel tank lining that would flake off. These particles would then clog the vehicle’s fuel system, causing it to lose power and potentially causing an accident.

The company said they filed the lawsuit after discovering a memo sent to dealerships from the Ford Motor Co. in 2007 acknowledging the defect by saying, “hundreds, if not thousands” of drivers had reported the problem; however, the memo made no mention of recalling the affected vehicles or fixing the problem for owners who had already purchased the trucks.

The lawsuit is seeking class-action status and claims fraud, breach of warranty, and unjust enrichment, and seeks compensatory and punitive damages for the plaintiffs.

Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans Zwiebel declined to comment on the case.

The lawsuit comes just days after the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration began an investigation into faulty accelerators on some of the company’s other vehicles.
