DADSS Technology May Help Reduce Drunk Driving Accidents

Posted: June 5, 2015

Alcohol is one of the leading causes of accidents involving motor vehicles today. Research from the non-profit organization, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, shows that as many as one in three fatal collisions involves a driver who has had too much to drink. Luckily, a new piece of technology may help keep intoxicated motorists off the road.

Engineers have developed a device called Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS), which can be installed in any vehicle and can detect a driver’s blood alcohol level by sampling the air in the cabin of the vehicle or through the driver’s fingertips when they touch the steering wheel. If the driver is over the legal limit, the vehicle will not start. The unit can also be set to have zero tolerance for drivers who are under age 21.

According to Reuters, similar technology exists in ignition interlock systems, but those devices require the user to blow into a tube to gain a measurement. This can make interacting with the device cumbersome. Also, the units are rarely installed in vehicles without a court order, whereas DADSS can be purchased as a safety feature.

The implications of utilizing this technology could be huge, as the device could curb alcohol-related crashes involving commercial drivers, teens, and other private motorists.
