Anti-text messaging bill aims to prevent New York auto accidents

November 20, 2007

The Post-Standard reported that a senator is proposing a bill that would fine drivers $100 for sending text messages while driving in an effort to reduce New York car accidents.

The bill proposal comes just months after a horrific crash that took the lives of five teenage girls that had graduated from high school just days earlier. Police cited the inexperience of the driver and several calls and text messages that were made from her phone during the minutes up to the fiery New York auto accident.

Police are unsure if the driver was the one making the calls and sending the text messages. The car accident happened at night when the young woman crashed into a tractor-trailer on a two-line highway, and her SUV burst into flames, killing her and the other four occupants.

Using a hand-held cell phone while driving was outlawed in New York in 2001.
